Homalomena sp. Aceh 'Velvet' is an exceptionally rare, yet-to-be formally described species discovered in the Aceh region of northern Sumatra. This plant is highly sought after by collectors for its pubescent, velvety leaves and intense dark red colouration, a combination rarely seen in the genus. With its striking texture and deep tones, 'Velvet' brings a dramatic and exotic presence to any high-end aroid collection.
This plant originates in the tropical rainforests of northern Sumatra, where it grows in shaded understories with high humidity and constant warmth. Its velvety pubescent leaves are an adaptation to the dim, humid environment, where light is filtered through the forest canopy. Replicating these conditions in cultivation is key to maintaining its health and colour intensity.
'Velvet' grows slowly but steadily, rewarding patient growers with richly coloured leaves that intensify under stable conditions. Its compact, upright growth habit makes it ideal for display in decorative containers, where the velvety texture can be appreciated up close.
The genus name Homalomena derives from the Greek words homalos (“flat”) and mene (“moon”), referring to the rounded, flat shape of leaves in some species.
With deep red, velvety leaves and extreme rarity, Homalomena sp. Aceh 'Velvet' is a collector’s gem. Order today and secure this unique Sumatran species for your plant collection.
