Fern Potting Mix

• Coco coir: moisture-retentive, peat-free base that keeps the substrate light and airy.
• Worm castings: provide slow-release organic nutrients for steady growth.
• Perlite: increases airflow and drainage so fine roots are not smothered.
• Horticultural sand: helps distribute water evenly through the pot and gives weight for stability.
• Activated carbon: brings a small porous carbon fraction for moisture-retentive mixes; it does not replace suitable structure or cleanup.
• Lava gravel: improves structure, aeration and long-term stability.
• Organic nutrients: support continuous, moderate fern growth.

To mix your own: use 10 parts total following the ratios above (for example 4 parts coco coir, 1.5 parts worm castings, 3 parts perlite, 1 part sand plus small amounts of lava gravel and activated carbon). Add a little extra perlite for faster drainage or more coco coir if your ferns dry out too quickly.

Fern Soil Mix is intended for ferns that dislike dry spells. Combine it with careful watering and good humidity for best results.

• When to repot: repot when the root ball is dense, roots circle the pot or the old mix has compacted and no longer absorbs water well.
• Preparing the plant: gently remove loose old substrate by hand where possible. Rinse roots only if compacted material will not release safely, then avoid leaving the root ball exposed for long.
• Trimming: cut away dead or browning fronds and obviously rotten roots with clean scissors before potting into fresh mix.
• Planting: add a starting layer of Fern Soil Mix, set fern in the centre, spread the roots and backfill around them, keeping the root crown just below the surface.
• Settling the soil: lightly pat the mix to stabilise the plant without compacting it; water thoroughly so the substrate settles around the roots and air pockets close.
• Watering rhythm: aim for consistently moist but never swampy – the mix should feel slightly damp when checked with a finger, not dry and not saturated.
• Humidity: ferns respond well to higher ambient humidity; grouping plants or using a humidifier is usually more effective than heavy daily misting.
• Optional bottom watering: occasional bottom watering in a shallow tray can help rehydrate a pot evenly; always remove excess water afterwards so roots do not sit in it long term.

• NPK (mg/L): approximately 33 – 5.3 – 82.
• Organic matter: about 55 %.
• Dry matter: about 45 %.
• Water retention: roughly 50 %, tuned for constant moisture without heavy waterlogging.
• Structural stability: typically 3–4 years indoors before coco coir and bark components noticeably break down.
• Bioactive? Yes – suitable for bioactive setups with appropriate fauna.
• Pet considerations: No – contains perlite, fertiliser and activated carbon and is not intended for ingestion by pets or children.
