Epipremnum aureum is a wet-tropical climber native to Mo‘orea in the Society Islands.

Hiroaki Asaoka found the naturally occurring ‘Global Green’ mutation in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, in 2016.

Moderate to bright filtered light keeps the contrast between the two green tones clear and supports dense growth. A textured support encourages upward development and larger leaves.

Water thoroughly after the upper portion of the mix has dried, then let the pot drain. Use an airy, moisture-retentive aroid substrate and keep the plant around 18–28 °C with moderate humidity.

Prune above nodes and root node cuttings when propagation or a fuller pot is needed. Cut a persistently plain-green shoot back to patterned growth.

Feed lightly during active growth and reduce both water and fertiliser in cool, dim periods. Repot when roots crowd the container or the medium loses structure.

Colour balance and growth in ‘Global Green’

The balance between light and dark green naturally varies from leaf to leaf. A vigorous shoot that remains uniformly dark and begins to replace the patterned growth can be cut back to a patterned node.

Small leaves with long gaps between them usually improve when the aerial roots can grip a stable vertical support.

About the name Epipremnum aureum

Epipremnum combines Greek epi, meaning upon, with premnon, meaning tree trunk, referring to the way the vine attaches to a support.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Epipremnum in 1857 in Bonplandia (Hannover), volume 5, page 45.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard-François André first described it as Pothos aureus in 1880 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 27, page 69. George Sydney Bunting later placed it in Epipremnum as Epipremnum aureum in 1964 in Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 50, page 28.
