Epipremnum aureum ‘Global Green’

Origin and selection history of Epipremnum aureum ‘Global Green’

Hiroaki Asaoka discovered and selected ‘Global Green’ in Aichi, Japan, in 2016 as a naturally occurring mutation of Epipremnum aureum. The selection was retained for its stable two-tone green pattern and full, leafy growth.

Epipremnum aureum is native to Mo‘orea in French Polynesia.

Caring for Global Green pothos

• Light: Bright indirect light keeps the variegation distinct. The plant can also cope with moderate indoor light.
• Water: Allow the upper part of the potting mix to begin drying before watering again. Do not leave the pot standing in runoff.
• Humidity: Average indoor humidity is suitable; more consistent humidity can help new leaves open without sticking or developing dry edges.
• Temperature: Keep the plant warm and away from cold windows or draughty doorways.
• Substrate: Use a loose, airy mix that drains well but does not dry out too quickly.
• Pruning and support: Pinch or prune long vines for a fuller pot, or train selected stems upward for progressively larger leaves.
• Feeding, repotting and propagation: Feed lightly through active growth and reduce feeding when growth slows in the darker season. Repot when roots crowd the container. Propagate from cuttings that include at least one healthy node.

Common problems with ‘Global Green’

• The green pattern becomes harder to see: Very low light can make the colour differences less obvious. Move the plant gradually to brighter indirect light and look at the next few leaves rather than treating one greener leaf as reversion.
• Yellow leaves and a heavy, wet pot: Let the substrate dry further and check that both the mix and container are draining properly.
• Brown dry edges: Check for repeated drought, hot direct sun or a position next to a strong heat source, then correct the most likely cause.
• Speckled or misshapen new leaves: Inspect closely for thrips or spider mites, isolate affected plants, and use a product labelled for the confirmed pest on ornamental houseplants. Repeat only at the interval stated on the label.

Epipremnum aureum ‘Global Green’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

About the name Epipremnum aureum

Epipremnum combines Greek epi, meaning upon, with premnon, meaning tree trunk, referring to the way the vine attaches to a support.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Epipremnum in 1857 in Bonplandia (Hannover), volume 5, page 45.

Jean Jules Linden and Édouard-François André first described it as Pothos aureus in 1880 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 27, page 69. George Sydney Bunting later placed it in Epipremnum as Epipremnum aureum in 1964 in Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, volume 50, page 28.
