Dracaena trifasciata ‘Moonshine’ African origin and Silver Moon name

‘Moonshine’ is also known as ‘Silver Moon’. The species comes from southern Nigeria, parts of west-central Africa and Tanzania, where it grows in tropical areas with a dry season.

Its older botanical name is Sansevieria trifasciata. DNA studies placed Sansevieria within Dracaena, which led to the name Dracaena trifasciata in 2017.

How to care for Dracaena trifasciata ‘Moonshine’

• Light: Give bright filtered light. Protect the pale leaves from intense midday sun behind glass.
• Water: Let the potting mix dry throughout before the next watering; then water thoroughly and let the pot drain fully.
• Temperature: Keep ‘Moonshine’ around 15–24°C and away from cold draughts.
• Humidity: Normal room humidity is fine. Keep the pale leaves dry and allow normal airflow.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, free-draining succulent mix in a container with drainage holes.
• Feeding: During periods of fresh growth, give a light feed roughly monthly.
• Slower growth: Cooler, darker conditions slow growth and leave the mix damp for longer, so wait longer before watering again.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or new rosettes begin to crowd the container.
• Propagation: Split off rooted side shoots to keep the ‘Moonshine’ leaf colour and pattern.
• Handling: Sap may irritate skin when the plant is cut or divided, so gloves are useful. Keep the leaves where children and pets cannot chew them; eating them can cause stomach upset.

Dracaena trifasciata ‘Moonshine’ common problems and care fixes

• Tan or bleached patches: Strong direct sun can mark the pale leaf surface. Move the plant to bright filtered light and check new leaves for improvement.
• Round water-soaked spots that enlarge: This can be a sign of anthracnose, a fungal leaf disease. Isolate the plant, keep the leaves dry and remove badly damaged leaves with clean scissors.
• Soft base or a leaning rosette: A soft base or leaning rosette can develop when the potting mix stays wet. Check the base and roots. Use a knife that has been cleaned and disinfected to remove every soft area until firm, healthy tissue remains. Discard the rotten material and repot the healthy section in fresh, fast-draining mix.
• Fine webbing, pale speckling or cottony clusters: Check for spider mites and mealybugs, then isolate the plant. If treatment is needed, use a product labelled for the pest and follow the label directions.
• Wrinkled or folded leaves: If the roots are firm and the mix is dry, wrinkling points to lack of water. Water thoroughly and let the pot drain completely.

Why do both Sansevieria trifasciata and Dracaena trifasciata appear?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. The epithet trifasciata means three-banded.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

David Prain first described it as Sansevieria trifasciata in 1903 in Bengal Plants, volume 2, page 1054. David Mabberley later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena trifasciata in 2017 in Mabberley’s Plant-book, edition 4, page 1101.

Sansevieria remains common in horticulture. Pei-Luen Lu and Clifford Morden showed that it belongs within Dracaena in a 2014 DNA study in Systematic Botany, volume 39. Kew’s World Checklist treats Sansevieria trifasciata as a synonym of Dracaena trifasciata.
