Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia is the narrow-leaved dragon tree often sold as Dracaena marginata. It has long, narrow green leaves with reddish to purplish margins. The leaves grow in tufts at the tops of slim woody canes, so the plant grows upward more than outward.
As the canes lengthen, older lower leaves drop and leave fine leaf scars along the stems. A mature indoor plant can become tall over time, but pruning keeps the height under control. Cut canes usually send out new shoots below the cut, so pruning can also help an older plant branch.
This plant comes from the western Indian Ocean region, where it grows as a shrub or tree in warm tropical conditions. Mature plants can rarely produce small fragrant white flowers and yellow-orange berries indoors.
Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia is toxic if ingested. Keep it away from pets and small children, and clear away fallen leaves or cut cane pieces.
Angustifolia means narrow-leaved. Dracaena marginata is the older name still commonly used for this plant.
