Dracaena fragrans 'Ulises'
Dracaena fragrans 'Ulises' has dark green margins, grey-green centres and narrow pale striping. The leaves are thicker, broader and slightly concave compared with the older 'Warneckii' line.
New foliage grows from the tips of woody canes. As the plant matures, lower leaves may age away and expose the ringed stems underneath. The thicker leaves are one of the easiest ways to recognise it, while the root zone still needs careful drying between waterings.

Thicker leaves from the Warneckii line
Dracaena fragrans is native to Tropical Africa, where the species grows as a shrub or small tree. Older labels may use Dracaena deremensis for this group.
'Ulises' is a natural sport from the 'Warneckii' line, selected in Costa Rica in the 1990s. Compared with older Warneckii-type plants, it has darker green margins, grey-green centres, narrow pale striping and thicker, more concave leaves.
Care for firm cane growth
- Light: Give bright to moderate filtered light. Enough light keeps the new growth firmer, while harsh direct sun can leave dry marks.
- Watering: Let the mix dry well between waterings, even though the leaves feel firm and thick.
- Substrate: Use an airy, draining mix with coarse structure. Roots need oxygen as much as they need moisture.
- Temperature: Keep around 18–27 °C and protect the plant from cold draughts, cold floors and wet winter substrate.
- Water quality: Brown tips often mean the plant is reacting to fluoride, mineral-heavy water, fertiliser salts or uneven watering.
- Leaf cleaning: Wipe the leaves occasionally and use that time to check the leaf bases and cane joints.
- Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Reduce fertiliser when growth slows in lower seasonal light.
- Repotting and pruning: Repot when the roots fill the container or the plant becomes top-heavy. Tall canes can be shortened during active growth, and healthy nodes may reshoot.
Stress signs on thicker striped leaves
- Brown tips: Usually linked to fluoride, salts, dry heat, overfeeding or irregular watering.
- Soft lower cane: Check the roots and lower stem after prolonged wet, cold conditions.
- Dull striping: Dust, weak light or stressed new growth can make the pattern look less clear.
- Sudden leaf drop: Look for cold exposure, wet roots or a sharp change in light after moving the plant.
- Pests: Scale and mealybugs can settle at cane nodes; spider mites and thrips may appear on leaf surfaces and undersides.
Safe placement
Dracaena fragrans 'Ulises' should be placed away from pets and small children. Dracaena leaves can cause digestive upset if ingested, so remove fallen leaves and pruned cane pieces after maintenance.
