‘Compacta’ has been grown for many years as a compact form of Dracaena fragrans. It also gives its name to the Compacta Group, which includes closely related Dracaena with short leaves and tightly packed growth.

Wild Dracaena fragrans grows across tropical Africa, including seasonally dry regions.

• Light: Bright indirect light supports dense, even crowns and a glossy leaf surface.
• Water: Wait until the surface is dry and the pot feels lighter. Water enough to moisten the mix throughout, then empty any collected drainage water.
• Potting mix: The dense crown benefits from potting mix that stays airy. Use a peat-free blend that drains quickly after watering.
• Temperature: Temperatures of about 18–27°C suit ‘Compacta’.
• Humidity: Moderate humidity suits the compact rosettes. Leave a little space around the tightly packed leaves so they dry easily after watering.
• Water quality and feeding: Where tap water contains fluoride, rainwater or filtered water is useful. Feed lightly while the crown is producing new leaves.
• Repotting and pruning: Repot when the roots are tightly packed or drainage slows. A clean stem cut can reduce height and encourage shoots below it.

Common issues with Dracaena fragrans ‘Compacta’

• Brown tips: Fluoride-rich water, fertiliser buildup, dry air or irregular moisture can mark the leaf ends. Try cleaner water and keep the watering routine steadier.
• Yellow leaves deep in the leafy head: Check whether the potting mix has been staying wet for too long and inspect the roots. If rot is present, disinfect your scissors or pruners and cut away the soft sections. Keep the healthy roots that still feel firm, throw out the rotten pieces and repot in new, airy potting mix.
• Dry rust-coloured patches: Strong sun through glass can scorch the glossy leaves. Move the pot away from hot window glass or use a sheer curtain to diffuse direct sun.
• Dark, wet-looking spots: Remove affected leaves, water at the potting mix and leave a little room around the tight leafy head so it dries easily.
• Sticky residue, cottony pockets or fine webbing: Look deep inside the tight leafy head for scale, mealybugs and spider mites. Clean away visible pests and choose a treatment whose label covers the pest you found. Repeat only when the product label tells you to.

Dracaena fragrans: where the name comes from

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. Fragrans is Latin for fragrant and refers to the flowers.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Aletris fragrans in 1762 in Species Plantarum, second edition, page 456. John Bellenden Ker Gawler later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena fragrans in 1808 in Botanical Magazine, volume 27, plate 1081.
