Dracaena sanderiana 'Gold' origin and naming

'Gold' is a cultivar of Dracaena sanderiana, a species native from western Central Africa to north-eastern Angola. It grows there as a small shrub in humid tropical habitats.

The plant trade has also used the name Dracaena braunii for plants in this group. Botanists now recognise Dracaena braunii and Dracaena sanderiana as separate species.

Indoor growing conditions for Dracaena sanderiana 'Gold'

• Light: Bright, filtered daylight suits 'Gold' well. Use a sheer curtain at a window with strong midday sun.
• Water: Water after the surface of the potting mix begins to dry. Moisten the root ball evenly and empty any excess water that drains through. Allow more drying time when low light or cooler temperatures slow new growth.
• Water quality: If tap water leaves residue or brown tips keep returning, rainwater or filtered water is worth using.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, moisture-retentive houseplant mix with reliable drainage.
• Humidity: Moderate room humidity is suitable. Persistent hot, dry airflow can crisp the narrow leaf margins, so keep the plant away from radiators and heating outlets.
• Support: Slender canes can become harder to keep upright once they reach around 60–90 cm. Add a slim stake if a cane starts to lean.
• Temperature: Choose a warm position with stable temperatures and keep 'Gold' clear of cold draughts.
• Feeding: Apply a small amount of balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while fresh foliage is developing. Feed less often once growth slows.
• Repotting: Repot once roots crowd the container or compacted mix begins holding water longer. Increase the pot size only slightly.
• Propagation: Take a healthy cane section that includes at least one node. It can root and produce a new shoot.
• Pet safety: Place 'Gold' where pets cannot chew it. Dracaena sanderiana is harmful if swallowed, and its sap can irritate skin.

Troubleshooting Dracaena sanderiana 'Gold'

• Brown tips or dry yellow margins: Dry air, fluoride or accumulated minerals can damage the leaf edges. Use rainwater or filtered water, keep the leaves clear of hot dry airflow and rinse accumulated salts from the potting mix with plenty of clean water, allowing the pot to drain afterwards.
• Yellowing leaves with softness near the bottom of a cane: Wet roots can lead to rot in the root system and lower stem. Take 'Gold' out of its pot. Clean and disinfect the cutting tool, then trim off rotted roots or cane tissue until the cuts show firm, healthy material. Discard the rotted material, then repot the healthy plant in fresh, airy mix.
• Curling foliage with rusty or dry brown marks: Hot glass and strong direct sun can stress the foliage. Move the plant back from the hottest exposure and soften intense sunlight with a sheer curtain or other light filter.
• Cottony clusters, fine webbing or hard bumps on leaves or canes: Check the nodes and leaf bases for mealybugs, spider mites or scale. Keep the plant apart from others, remove visible pests where practical and use a product labelled for the pest present. Follow all label instructions, including the timing of repeat treatments.

When was Dracaena braunii first published, and what does it mean?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. Braunii honours Johannes M. Braun (1859–1893), whose collected material formed the basis of the species name.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.
