The forest cactus sold as Red Tip develops flattened green segments whose fresh ends can carry a red or bronze flush. The colour is strongest on soft new growth and fades as each section hardens. Fine scallops run along the margins, and the succulent segments remain flexible enough to arch with length.
Young plants hold their growth upward and outward; older segments form progressively longer trails. Red Tip belongs to the wider Disocactus ackermannii horticultural group of species and hybrids, but its exact species and parentage are unknown. The reddish new growth is its most consistent identifying feature.
