Pale veins run through the oval green leaves of Dischidia ovata ‘Melon’, creating its watermelon-like pattern. The leaves are thick, slightly waxy, and grow along narrow stems that trail or lightly grip a support.
A shallow, open root zone suits it better than dense soil. This plant grows on trees and rocks in nature, where roots get moisture without being buried in wet substrate.
Dischidia ovata grows from New Guinea to northern Australia, in warm humid places where it roots onto trees and rocks.
The roots use airy pockets rather than deep soil. Indoors, use an open mix, a modest pot, and water less often in cooler or darker conditions.
Cut stems may release milky white sap that can irritate skin or eyes and should not be ingested. Rinse hands after pruning and keep the plant out of reach of pets and children.
Ovata refers to the oval leaf shape. ‘Melon’ refers to the pale veins that give the leaves their watermelon-like pattern.
