The rounded leaves of Dischidia nummularia are small, thick, and coin-shaped, usually around 1 cm across. They grow along thin trailing stems, which is where the common name String of Nickels comes from.
Its roots stay close to the surface, so shallow pots suit it better than deep pots that stay wet. It likes regular moisture, but the mix should partly dry between watering.
Dischidia nummularia grows from southern China through tropical Asia to northern Australia. In the wild, it roots into bark, rock surfaces, mossy patches, and small pockets of organic material.
In a shallow pot with an open mix, the roots dry more evenly after watering. Water before the stems dry out completely, then let the mix partly dry again.
Fresh cuts may release a little white sap. Rinse hands after pruning or preparing cuttings.
Nummularia means coin-like, matching the small rounded leaves.
Dischidia nummularia trails in fine strands of small coin-shaped leaves.
