Dieffenbachia ‘Tiki’

Origin of Dieffenbachia ‘Tiki’

Dan Vanderlaan and Robert Hartman found ‘Tiki’ as a spontaneous variant among plants recorded at the time as Dieffenbachia memoria-corsii at Vanderlaan’s Nursery in Lake Worth, Florida. Its unusual form stayed consistent when the plant was propagated.

Care for Dieffenbachia ‘Tiki’

A steady 18–27 °C suits the plant; sustained temperatures below 15 °C are too cool. Because ‘Tiki’ branches freely, give it bright indirect light from several directions where possible and turn the pot if one side starts stretching. Protect the wavy leaves from strong midday sun and cold draughts.

Leaf care: Wipe the uneven leaves carefully and inspect the many branch points while you work.

Dense branching can make the pot harder to judge at a glance, so feel the mix before watering and notice how heavy the container is. Wait until the upper mix is partly dry and the container has lightened, then water thoroughly and allow it to drain completely. Use a loose, airy mix that drains reliably around the crowded base.

Humidity: Hold the surrounding air near 50–60% for routine growth. Use gentle circulation around the leaves. Direct heater or air-conditioning airflow can dry the wavy margins.

Feeding: Give modest amounts of fertiliser during active growth.

Pot size: Choose pot size from root crowding and drainage. New shoots alone do not call for a larger pot.

Propagation: Use a sound top cutting or sections of mature cane that contain nodes.

Troubleshooting Dieffenbachia ‘Tiki’

• Several leaves yellow or droop — Work out whether the pot has dried too far or is staying wet. Water a dry pot completely and let it drain; with a wet pot, hold off and make sure the drainage holes are open. If yellowing continues in wet mix, check the roots, but leave the plant in place when the only change is one ageing lower leaf.
• Very fine pale dots or webbing appear over the mottled leaves — Inspect the undersides and veins for spider mites. Isolate the plant, rinse both surfaces well and check nearby plants. If mites are still present after rinsing, use a treatment labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants. The spider-mite guide explains the full treatment.
• Brown tips or crisp wavy margins develop — Check for an uneven watering rhythm, fertiliser-salt build-up and dry air moving across the foliage. If salts are likely, flush the potting mix; water more consistently and move ‘Tiki’ away from heaters or air-conditioning. The brown-tip guide can help with the remaining causes.
• Branches lengthen and later leaves become smaller — Check whether light reaches the whole branching plant. A gradual move into brighter indirect light, together with occasional rotation, should improve later shoots. Judge the result on new growth because existing stretched branches will stay long.

Wear gloves for pruning, taking cuttings and repotting. Wash Dieffenbachia sap from skin with soap and water for 15 minutes; if it reaches an eye, rinse with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persistent.
