Dieffenbachia 'Camilla'

Names and botanical identity of Dieffenbachia 'Camilla'

‘Camilla’, also commonly written ‘Camille’, is a long-established cream-centred Dieffenbachia. Older plant labels may also show the historical names D. maculata or D. picta; these are now included under Dieffenbachia seguine.

Care for Dieffenbachia ‘Camilla’

Light and position. Choose a spot where bright indirect light reaches through the whole plant. Turn it occasionally if the window is mainly on one side, and protect it from hot midday sun.

Warmth and humidity. Hold temperatures near 18–27 °C and protect the plant from prolonged conditions under 15 °C during routine care. Use a humidity range near 50–60%.

Watering. The crowded foliage can hide damp mix. Feel the mix and lift the pot before watering. When the surface begins to feel dry and the pot is lighter than after watering, wet the mix evenly and let the excess drain.

Potting mix. Use a loose, airy mix that releases surplus water and keeps air around the roots.

Leaf care. Part the leaves gently while cleaning so the inner leaf bases are visible as well as the outer foliage.

Feeding. Use a small amount of complete fertiliser while new growth is being produced.

Repotting. Give the roots more room when they fill the pot, choosing a container only slightly larger. Slower drainage calls for checking and, if needed, refreshing the mix.

Propagation. Take a healthy top cutting or sections of mature cane containing nodes.

Common Problems with Dieffenbachia ‘Camilla’

• New leaves are smaller and the plant opens up instead of staying compact — Check whether enough daylight reaches the centre as well as the outer leaves. If ‘Camilla’ is stretching or leaning, move it gradually into brighter indirect light. The existing open sections will remain, but later leaves should grow more closely together. The bright-indirect-light guide can help with placement.
• Pale or brown patches appear on exposed leaves — Think back to the leaf’s position and any recent move. Direct sun, a cold window surface or a draught can each leave a local mark. Give ‘Camilla’ a warm, draught-free position with plenty of indirect light; the damaged area will stay visible, so watch the next leaves for a clean result.
• Cottony white material appears deep in the crowded foliage — Check the axils, stems, undersides and pot rim for mealybugs. Move it away from the rest of the collection and check neighbouring plants. Remove a few insects individually with a cotton swab lightly moistened with household alcohol, avoiding healthy leaf tissue. For a broader infestation, use a product labelled for mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants. Use the mealybug guide for the remaining treatment steps.
• Several leaves yellow or droop together — Decide whether the pot is dry or wet before changing the watering. Rewet a dry root ball thoroughly and let it drain. If the mix is still wet, pause watering and confirm that the pot drains freely. Only unpot ‘Camilla’ if the yellowing continues under wet conditions, and wear gloves and use clean, disinfected scissors to cut only clearly rotten, soft root tissue back to firm growth, then discard the removed pieces.

Wear gloves when pruning, repotting or handling broken leaves and stems. Wash sap from skin with soap and water for 15 minutes. If it gets into an eye, rinse with clean water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persist.
