Dieffenbachia 'Camille' has broad oval leaves with pale cream centres and green margins. The leaves grow from short upright stems, so young plants often look full and compact.
You may also see the name written as Dieffenbachia 'Camilla'. Both spellings are used for this cream-centred Dieffenbachia.
The light centre browns more easily than the green edge. Direct sun, dry patches in the root ball or excess fertiliser can mark the leaf centre. Bright filtered light, regular watering and gentle feeding reduce brown marks on new leaves.
As a Dieffenbachia, 'Camille' belongs to Araceae, the aroid family. It has the same broad-leaved, upright growth found in many cultivated dumb cane plants.
'Camille' develops a visible stem over time as old lower leaves yellow and drop. The pale parts show sun marks and fertiliser burn sooner than darker green leaves.
A mature plant may flower with the typical aroid flower structure, though this is uncommon indoors.
Dieffenbachia 'Camille' / 'Camilla' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals in its sap. Cut or broken tissue can irritate skin and eyes, and ingested plant parts can irritate the mouth. Use gloves when pruning, rinse sap from skin promptly and keep the plant away from pets and children.
The genus Dieffenbachia honours Joseph Dieffenbach of the Schönbrunn palace gardens in Vienna. Dieffenbachia 'Camille' / 'Camilla' has light leaf centres, green margins and short upright stems.
