Chlorospatha atropurpurea is native to Ecuador and grows as a terrestrial perennial or subshrub in the wet tropical biome.

Its leaves and inflorescences arise close to a short stem at ground level, giving the plant a low profile within humid tropical vegetation.

Care for Chlorospatha atropurpurea

• Humidity and moisture: Keep humidity consistently elevated and the substrate evenly moist. Avoid a hard dry-out, which can quickly stress the plant and leave the foliage drooping or damaged.
• Light: Give bright filtered daylight and protect the leaves from hot direct sun.
• Root zone: Use an airy aroid mix that holds moisture without becoming stagnant. Keep the growing point at the surface and do not leave the pot standing saturated.
• Temperature and airflow: Maintain stable warmth, especially after watering, with gentle air movement around the crown. Cold, wet roots are a particular risk for this wet-tropical aroid.

Troubleshooting Chlorospatha atropurpurea

• Tan or bleached patches appear on exposed leaf surfaces: Strong direct sun can scorch the delicate foliage. Move the plant back to filtered light, leave damaged tissue to dry naturally and acclimatise any future direct exposure gradually.
• Leaves curl or droop while the root ball dries: This wet-tropical aroid reacts poorly to a hard dry-out. Rehydrate the mix evenly and restore steady humidity. If the mix is already wet, hold further watering and inspect the roots; remove soft or brown roots and refresh the aerated mix if damage is present.
• Tiny pale feeding marks, fine webbing or moving specks appear beneath the leaves: Mites are possible on stressed aroid foliage. Move the plant away from nearby foliage, clean both leaf surfaces carefully and follow a labelled mite treatment through the full repeat cycle given on the product.
• The growing point turns dark and soft: Crown or root rot is advancing. Remove saturated substrate and decayed tissue immediately, retain only firm crown or offset material with healthy roots and restart in fresh aerated mix; see the root rot guide for the recovery sequence.

How the name Chlorospatha atropurpurea came about

Chlorospatha combines Greek chloros, green, with spathe, the leaf-like bract around an aroid’s flower spike. Atropurpurea means dark purple, joining Latin elements for dark and purple.

Michael T. Madison first described it as Caladiopsis atropurpurea in 1978 in Contributions from the Gray Herbarium, volume 208, page 97. Michael T. Madison later placed it in Chlorospatha as Chlorospatha atropurpurea in 1981 in Selbyana, volume 5, page 354.
