Chlorospatha atropurpurea

An Ecuadorian aroid from shaded wet ground

Chlorospatha atropurpurea is a terrestrial aroid native to Ecuador. Its leaves and compact floral structures emerge from a short stem close to the ground, placing the plant among the lowest layers of tropical vegetation.

Its natural background is humid forest, where water gathers along slopes, stream margins and other consistently moist ground. Overhead trees soften direct sun, recurring rain renews the organic surface layer and warm air limits rapid drying. The leaves emerge within this densely rooted, sheltered and moisture-rich forest floor.

How to keep Chlorospatha atropurpurea healthy

Light

Keep Chlorospatha atropurpurea in strong filtered daylight near an east or north-east window, or farther back from a brighter exposure. Gentle early sun is possible after acclimation, but hot direct rays scorch the thin leaves and overheat its wet root ball. Insufficient light produces weaker leaf stalks and progressively smaller leaves. The dark colouring is inherited; a useful light level maintains firm growth without trying to deepen it through sun stress.

Watering

Chlorospatha atropurpurea should remain evenly moist. Water thoroughly as soon as the surface begins to lose moisture, drain the pot and never allow the fine root mass to become hard or pull from the container edge. Even a short severe dry spell can collapse leaves and kill root tips. The plant also needs oxygen, so stale standing water and muddy substrate remain unsuitable. Warmth and active leaves raise demand; cool low light and a large plastic pot slow drying.

Substrate and roots

Use a fine, rich aroid mix that holds plenty of water while retaining air, such as quality potting substrate or coir with fine bark, perlite and a little chopped sphagnum. Chlorospatha atropurpurea has fine roots around a short rhizomatous base and does not suit a coarse orchid mix with large dry gaps. Avoid compacted peat and heavy soil. Keep the crown at its existing level, use an open drainage hole and rinse salts from the consistently moist mix regularly.

Temperature

Maintain Chlorospatha atropurpurea between 21 and 28 °C, with 18 °C as a practical minimum for both air and roots. Cooler wet conditions cause a rapid setback even before obvious leaf damage appears. Keep the pot off cold windowsills and away from exterior-door draughts or air-conditioning. Direct heater air dries the leaf margins unevenly. Stable warmth is most important after root disturbance and while a new leaf is opening.

Humidity and airflow

Ordinary dry household air is usually insufficient for clean growth on Chlorospatha atropurpurea. Aim for stable humidity around 65–80% with gentle air exchange through the leaves and across the pot surface. A ventilated cabinet or humidifier is more effective than misting. Still saturated air encourages water to linger in the crown, while repeated spraying does not prevent dry edges once the room becomes dry again.

Fertilising

Feed Chlorospatha atropurpurea lightly with a complete foliage fertiliser at quarter strength every four to six weeks while new leaves and roots are forming. A warm, well-lit plant may remain active throughout the year and can continue receiving dilute nutrients. Stop or reduce only when growth and water use slow. Never feed a dry root ball, and run low-mineral water through the pot between doses because the fine wet roots are particularly exposed to salt accumulation.

Repotting

Repot Chlorospatha atropurpurea when roots fill the drainage area, the crown lifts, watering becomes unusually frequent or the centre of the mix breaks down and stays muddy. Choose a pot only 2–3 cm wider. Keep the root ball intact, since stripping the fine roots causes a long recovery. Work in stable warmth, remove only dead roots and loose degraded mix, and return the rhizome and growing point to their former level.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Chlorospatha atropurpurea needs no stake, but its leaves require space away from traffic and neighbouring pots. Do not rotate the plant while a rolled leaf is opening; turn it gradually only after the leaf has firmed. Cut fully yellow leaves near the base and leave resistant old sheaths until they dry. Clean mature leaves with a gentle rinse or a supported damp cloth, keeping fingers and standing water away from soft new growth.

The dark velvet blade looks washed out

A fresh leaf may change tone as it hardens, but hot direct light can bleach the surface and leave a fixed tan area. Move the plant to bright filtered light and compare new growth. Fine pale stippling or moving specks on the purple underside points to mites rather than light alone.

The purple-backed leaves curl while the enclosure is humid

Humid air does not prevent a small root ball from drying, and it also does not rescue roots kept airless. Dry mix and firm petioles call for even rehydration; wet mix with continued curl calls for inspection of the fine roots. Correct the root problem before changing the enclosure humidity.

A new leaf opens torn or remains tightly rolled

Friction and uneven moisture can damage the tender velvet blade during expansion. Do not peel it open. Repeated silver scarring, black specks or distorted petioles should prompt a close check for thrips concealed in the rolled leaf.

Water-soaked spots enlarge on the leaf

A stable bruise can follow contact with wet glass, but an enlarging translucent lesion is active damage. Remove the affected blade with a sterile tool, prevent leaves touching condensation and increase gentle air exchange. Isolate the plant if new spots continue to appear.

The growing point turns dark and soft

Dark softness at this small crown needs immediate action because little tissue is available to spare. Remove the plant from saturated substrate, cut away decay and save only a firm crown or clean offset with healthy roots. Keep the growing point at the surface in fresh, aerated mix.

Pet Safety

Chlorospatha atropurpurea is an aroid and contains irritating insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing the leaves or stems can cause immediate mouth pain and swelling, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing in cats, dogs and people. Keep it out of reach and seek prompt advice if swelling or swallowing problems occur.

A green spathe and a dark-purple epithet

Chlorospatha combines Greek chloros, green, with spathe, the leaf-like bract around an aroid’s flower spike. Adolf Engler established the genus in 1878.

Atropurpurea means dark purple, joining Latin elements for dark and purple. Michael Madison described the species before later placing it in Chlorospatha.
