Origin and botanical background of Caladium ‘White Christmas’

Wild Caladium bicolor grows primarily in the wet tropical biome across Central America and much of South America. Its seasonal leaf crown rises from a tuber, which remains after the thin blades decline.

Repotting, root care and watering

Repot when roots or corm fill the container, the substrate has compacted or drainage slows. Taper watering as the canopy yellows, then keep the firm leafless corm dry, ventilated and away from chilling temperatures until shoots appear.

Light

Caladium ‘White Christmas’ is sensitive to strong direct sun. Its large white areas burn readily and may develop tan patches or holes.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of the substrate is dry and the lower root zone still feels lightly moist. A continuously saturated pot deprives the corm and fine roots of oxygen.

Substrate and roots

Use an open medium that buffers moisture without remaining dense and cold. Quality potting substrate with fine bark and perlite or pumice suits the corm and fine roots.

Temperature

Maintain steady warmth through active growth and keep the root zone away from chilling temperatures. Protect the corm from cold conditions.

Fertilising

Feed with a balanced, moderate-nitrogen fertiliser at a low dose during active growth. Stop during dormancy.

Caladium ‘White Christmas’ troubleshooting

• White tissue develops brown “melted” holes: Caladium ‘White Christmas’ is not considered sun tolerant, and its bright white panels scorch readily in direct sun or against hot glass. Move it to filtered light and check that the root ball has not dried abruptly. Dry damaged tissue will not heal; spreading soft lesions in a shaded position require a leaf-spot check instead.
• Green veins or olive areas become more noticeable: Dark green veins and green edging are normal parts of this white cultivar, and the balance can vary between leaves. This is not automatically chlorosis or pattern loss. Judge health by if new leaves expand normally and remain firm, not by expecting every blade to be equally white.
• The plant droops while the substrate is wet: Cool wet roots may stop supplying the large thin leaves before the tuber visibly softens. Saturated conditions can then damage the tuber; a soft crown or sour smell needs immediate action.
• Most leaves yellow together: After growth slows, coordinated yellowing with a firm tuber usually indicates dormancy. Reduce water as the foliage fades and keep the resting tuber warm and dry. Yellowing during active growth with a soft base is not normal seasonal decline.
• A stored tuber does not sprout: Confirm that it is firm and warm before adding moisture. A healthy dormant tuber may wait for sustained warmth, while a cold wet tuber is more likely to decay. Inspect promptly if it becomes wrinkled, soft, mouldy or begins to leak.

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did Caladium get its name?

The genus name Caladium comes from Malay keladi, a word used for taro-like aroids.
