Repotting and dormancy

Repot when roots reach the drainage hole, the corm crowds the container or the mix has become dense. Store the dormant corm dry, airy and away from chilling temperatures until buds become active.

Caladium ‘Kelly’ grows most reliably at steady warmth. Keep the active plant away from chilling temperatures and protect the corm from cold conditions.

Light

Place Caladium ‘Kelly’ close to a bright east-facing window or behind a sheer curtain at a stronger exposure. The white and pink-speckled parts scorch more readily than the green tissue, so protect them from hot midday sun.

Watering

For a baby or compact plant, water when the upper layer of the substrate is dry and the pot feels lighter. A small pot can dry fast enough to wilt the thin leaves, but the small corm also suffers in saturated substrate.

Fertilising

Feed Caladium ‘Kelly’ only after it is rooted and producing leaves, using a complete liquid fertiliser at the low end of the label rate. Stop during dormancy and flush the small pot if deposits or unexplained edge burn appear.

Handling and leaf care

Keep the small plant where its pale leaves will not be touched repeatedly. Rotate the pot slightly if the clump leans, leaving individual petioles and rolled leaves alone.

Pink dots spread across otherwise white leaves

Scattered pink speckles and a stronger blush on some leaves are normal for ‘Kelly’. They are part of the tissue and stay flat and dry. New marks that are sunken, water-soaked, mobile when wiped or surrounded by dead tissue are not the cultivar pattern; isolate the plant and inspect for leaf spot or pests.

White sections bruise or turn brown

Pale thin blades show pressure, hot glass and direct sun sooner than green foliage. A fixed bruise is cosmetic, while dry brown patches on the light-facing side point to scorch. Keep leaves away from hot glass and use filtered light; remove only blades that are badly damaged or continuing to decay.

Leaf stalks soften and the clump falls outward

If the small pot is dry and light, the plant may simply need a thorough watering. If the substrate is wet, soft petioles can signal cold damage or a failing tuber. Move the plant to warmth, let excess moisture drain and inspect immediately if softness reaches the crown.

The tuber is slow to restart

A firm tuber can wake unevenly, and its first leaf may be small. Warmth should come before heavier watering: keep the mix barely moist until the bud and roots are active. A shrinking, leaking or soft tuber is deteriorating rather than resting and should be checked without delay.
