Caladium 'Gingerland'
Caladium 'Gingerland' is a strap-leaved Caladium with narrower leaves than the broad fancy-leaved types. The blades are creamy white with red speckles or blotches and green margins.
Several slim leaf stalks rise from the storage tuber and form a small cluster of narrow leaves above the pot. Red speckles sit across the narrow blades, with green margins around each leaf.
This cultivar needs the pot to stay warm while leaves are forming. When several leaves yellow together, the plant is usually preparing to rest, and the tuber should then be kept drier.
'Gingerland' comes from cultivated Caladium stock related to tropical Caladium bicolor. Keep it warm, water carefully while it has leaves, and let the tuber rest dry after yellowing.
Care
- Light: Bright filtered light or bright shade suits the narrow pale blades.
- Watering: Keep evenly lightly moist while leaves are growing. Let the top layer begin to dry between waterings.
- Mix: Use fine bark, perlite, pumice and a good houseplant base.
- Warmth: Keep above 18 °C and protect the storage tuber from cold wet substrate.
- Humidity: Moderate humidity helps limit crisping on the edges. Keep airflow gentle.
- Feeding: Use diluted balanced fertiliser during the leafy phase only.
- Rest: As leaves yellow, reduce watering and keep the resting tuber dry and warm.
- Pot size: Use a draining pot sized to the tuber so the mix dries evenly.
Common issues
- Crisp leaf tips: Usually dry air, uneven watering or heat near glass.
- Brown marks on pale tissue: Check sun intensity, cold contact or water drying on leaves.
- Grouped yellowing: Often the start of rest if the storage tuber remains firm.
- Soft tuber: Wet, cold mix around the tuber is the main thing to correct.
Division
Propagate by dividing mature, firm tubers. Each section needs a visible bud or growing point.
Toxicity note
Keep Caladium 'Gingerland' away from pets and children. The leaves, leaf stalks and tuber contain calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, digestive tract and skin if plant tissue is eaten or handled after damage.
