Origin and botanical background of Caladium ‘Fiesta’

Wild Caladium bicolor occurs across wet tropical regions from Central America into South America. It is a tuberous herb with soft seasonal foliage, withdrawing below ground between successive crowns of leaves.

Repotting and dormancy

Repot when roots fill the pot, the corm reaches the wall, drainage slows or the plant becomes unstable. Store the dormant corm dry, ventilated and away from chilling temperatures until it sprouts.

Light

Place Caladium ‘Fiesta’ close to an east-facing window or in bright filtered light. Introduce gentle morning sun gradually and move the plant back if the leaves bleach or develop dry patches.

Watering

Water when the upper layer of the substrate has dried and the pot feels lighter. A permanently wet corm is prone to decline.

Temperature

Keep active growth at steady warmth.

Humidity and airflow

Average indoor humidity is generally adequate. A moderately humid, stable room helps the many thin leaves expand without dry margins.

Fertilising

A vigorously growing plant can use a complete, moderate-nitrogen fertiliser at a modest dose occasionally while growth is active. Stop during dormancy and flush the substrate if salts collect.

Red-purple colour bleeds beside the main veins

This banded colour is part of ‘Fiesta’, not automatically bruising or disease. It should be dry, flat and integrated into the white blade. Investigate only if the area becomes soft, translucent or expands beyond the stable vein pattern after the leaf has hardened.

White areas develop brown-edged holes

This “melting” appearance is usually scorch after too much direct sun, especially through hot glass; a dry root ball can intensify it. Move the compact plant into bright filtered light and restore even moisture without leaving the pot saturated. If new holes continue to form away from direct sun, inspect closely for chewing pests and spreading leaf spots.

The dwarf clump stops producing leaves

Caladium ‘Fiesta’ is naturally compact, but a complete stall during its active phase usually points to a cool root zone, a recently disturbed root system or a tuber moving into rest. Check warmth and tuber firmness before increasing water or feed. Keep a firm inactive tuber only lightly moist until a new bud moves.

The crown collapses after a cool spell

Cold, wet substrate can damage a Caladium tuber quickly. Stop adding water, move the pot to steady warmth and inspect the crown. Any soft, dark or foul-smelling tissue should be removed back to firm material before the tuber is replanted in fresh aerated mix.

Caladium ‘Fiesta’ is toxic to people and pets

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

Caladium: name and meaning

The genus name Caladium comes from Malay keladi, a word used for taro-like aroids.
