Asplenium antiquum forms an upright bird’s-nest rosette of glossy strap-shaped fronds. Each bright to deep green blade has a dark central rib, slightly rippled margins and a rounded to gently pointed tip.
New fronds emerge tightly rolled from the centre and open soft, pale and nearly vertical. They lengthen, darken and arch outwards as firmer foliage develops behind them, eventually reaching 50–100 cm in good mature specimens. Brown spore lines form in regular rows on the undersides of fertile fronds. The widening rosette keeps its youngest growth upright in the middle while the oldest blades create a broad outer layer.
