Aspidistra elatior, Cast Iron Plant, produces broad dark green leaves directly from a creeping underground rhizome. Each blade is smooth, leathery and lance-shaped, with fine parallel veins and a long tapered tip.
New leaves appear as tightly rolled spears and stand noticeably lighter than the established foliage. The blades expand slowly, deepen in colour and arch slightly as they reach roughly 22–46 cm; their petioles add further height. The rhizome extends sideways and sends up additional leaves at intervals, gradually turning a few blades into a substantial clump. Small purple-brown flowers may form at soil level, partly hidden beneath the foliage. Mature plants retain their simple all-green appearance while gaining width, weight and a dense layered texture.
