Bronze-black velvet leaves and copper-red reticulate veins define Anoectochilus burmannicus. The foliage has a deep, warm tone, with fine copper lines spreading over the leaf surface.
This species grows close to the forest floor, creeping slowly through the upper substrate layer. Indoors, it prefers shaded warmth, high humidity and a fine mix that stays lightly moist without becoming dense around the roots.
Anoectochilus burmannicus is associated with shaded, humus-rich forest ground in parts of mainland Southeast Asia. In a pot, that means gentle light, warm air, high humidity and a substrate with both moisture and air space.
Keep the creeping stem near the surface instead of covering it deeply. New shoots form along the rhizome, and old leaves should be removed before they break down against the base of the plant.
This species is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Protect the shallow pot from pets that dig into soft substrate or pull at new leaves.
Anoectochilus burmannicus Rolfe is an accepted Orchidaceae species first published in Bulletin of Miscellaneous Information, Royal Gardens, Kew 1922(1): 24. The species epithet refers to Burma, the historical name for Myanmar, while Anoectochilus refers to the open-lipped structure of the flower.
