Alocasia suhirmaniana is a species from Southeast Sulawesi with broad glossy leaves, purple-brown textured petioles and dark purple spathes on mature plants. It grows from a rhizome rather than a bulb-like corm, forming a firm base that usually carries a small number of strong leaves at a time. The plant is best understood through that rhizome: it needs warmth, steady moisture and air around the base, not compact wet soil.
The leaves are broadly shield-shaped to sagittate, with the petiole attaching slightly within the blade rather than at the edge. Mature leaves can show rich green upper surfaces, darker purple tones beneath and pale grey-green major veins. The petioles are yellow-green to olive with purple-brown mottling, and they have a very fine puberulent texture that becomes noticeable up close. Broad leaves, textured petioles and dark flowers are among the traits that distinguish this species.
Alocasia suhirmaniana Yuzammi & A.Hay was formally described in 1998 and is named after Dr. Ir. Suhirman for his support of botanical research and conservation in Indonesia. In habitat it grows on shaded, humid rainforest slopes in Southeast Sulawesi. Mature plants may produce reddish-orange fruit after successful pollination.
Alocasia suhirmaniana contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals in the leaves, petioles and rhizome. If plant tissue is eaten or gets into the mouth, it can irritate the lips, tongue, mouth and throat, with drooling, swelling, vomiting or swallowing difficulty possible. Keep it away from pets and children, and wash hands after pruning, repotting or division.
Add Alocasia suhirmaniana to your collection if you want a Sulawesi species with strong leaf structure, fine petiole texture and a clear habitat-linked care routine.
