Alocasia 'Sedenii' is a historic cultivated hybrid with dark, metallic-toned leaves and an upright rhizomatous growth habit. The blades are elongated and shield-like, with a glossy deep green to blue-green upper surface, pale raised veins and richer burgundy-purple tones beneath.
New leaves rise on firm petioles from the base, then harden into broader, darker blades as the clump develops. Steady warmth, filtered light and a breathable substrate keep the rhizome active; cold, saturated substrate can stall the plant and damage the root system.
Alocasia 'Sedenii' builds close to the substrate line, with new petioles emerging from the rhizome rather than from a long visible stem. The cuprea-like leaf surface gives mature blades their darker, glossy look, while the longiloba background shows in the more elongated blade outline and pronounced venation.
As the clump develops, the pot should stay evenly moist but never waterlogged. A dense mix can keep the rhizome wet for too long, while a very dry rootball can lead to limp petioles, duller leaf surfaces and stressed edges.
Alocasia 'Sedenii' contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and small children, and wash hands after handling damaged leaves or roots.
Alocasia 'Sedenii' is recorded as a cultivated hybrid of Alocasia cuprea × Alocasia longiloba 'Lowii'. The name honours John Seden of Veitch Nurseries. G. Don published the genus name Alocasia in 1839 after separating these aroids from Colocasia.
