Where Alocasia scabriuscula grows naturally

Alocasia scabriuscula occupies a wide range of Bornean forest, from damp lowland ground to better-drained hill slopes and riverbanks. It also appears in brighter places where the forest has been disturbed.

Growing Alocasia scabriuscula

• Space: Leave moderate clearance around the leaves as the plant develops. If the container begins to feel top-heavy, use a more stable pot rather than adding unnecessary pot space.
• Light: Keep it somewhere bright but protected from harsh direct sun.
• Watering: During active growth, wait until the mix is no longer wet before watering again, but do not let the pot become completely dry. Water until excess runs from the drainage holes. Let the pot drain, then empty any water left in the saucer or cover pot.
• Potting mix: The mix should be fertile and remain loose after repeated watering rather than packing down around the roots.
• Temperature: Keep it around 20–28 °C and away from cold windows or draughts. Move it away from cooler spots before temperatures fall below 15 °C.
• Humidity: Alocasia does best with medium to high humidity. Keep it in a bright spot away from heaters and air-conditioning. If the air is dry, place it near other houseplants that like similar conditions, leaving space between the leaves, or use a clean humidifier.

Alocasia scabriuscula: what to check

• Lower leaves yellow while the plant wilts in damp potting mix: Pause watering and check whether the roots are still firm. Soft, dark or sour-smelling roots point to damage rather than thirst. Keep every firm root. If clearly rotten tissue has to be removed, use a disinfected blade, keep every firm healthy section, clean the blade between cuts and discard the removed material. If the roots are damaged, move the healthy roots into a clean pot with new, airy mix that suits the smaller root system.
• Fine pale speckles, dulling or webbing appear beneath the broad leaves: Inspect the undersides and larger veins for moving spider mites. When you find mites, separate this plant from the collection and rinse the foliage where practical. Use a treatment labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants, and repeat it only as directed on the label.
• Water-soaked spots darken, spread or develop yellow edges: This pattern may indicate bacterial leaf spot. Keep the foliage dry, water at potting-mix level and give the leaves enough space for gentle air movement. If one badly affected leaf keeps deteriorating, cut it off with a disinfected blade and dispose of it away from your other plants.

Alocasia scabriuscula: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

What scabriuscula means

Scabriuscula is Latin for “somewhat rough” or “slightly scabrous”. Nicholas Edward Brown first described Alocasia scabriuscula in 1879 in Gardeners’ Chronicle, new series, volume 12, page 296.
