Sharply pointed sagittate blades with deeply waved to strongly cut margins give Alocasia sanderiana 'Nobilis' a sharply cut outline. White to yellowish primary veins stand out against the dark green surface, while the undersides may carry purple colouring.
This horticultural selection within Alocasia sanderiana holds its leaves upright and can develop larger, more dramatic blades when grown warm, bright and humid.
Well-grown plants can reach approximately 60 cm tall, with petioles approaching a similar length. Blades can reach approximately 40 cm long and 20 cm wide. Leaves arise singly or a few together from a short, decumbent to creeping stem. Each sagittate blade has a long anterior lobe and pointed posterior lobes, with margins ranging from deeply undulate to sub-pinnatifid. The primary veins branch strongly from the central rib and appear white to yellowish against the dark green surface. The underside can carry purple colouring. Juvenile plants may begin with simpler leaf outlines, while longer points and stronger marginal movement develop as the leaves mature.
At species level, Alocasia sanderiana is native to Mindanao in the Philippines. It is associated with old forest, including damp ravines at low elevation, where conditions are warm, humid and shaded by filtered forest light.
Alocasia sanderiana 'Nobilis' contains irritating oxalate crystals in the leaves, petioles and stem tissue. If plant tissue is eaten, it can irritate the mouth and digestive tract. Keep the plant away from pets and young children, and wash your hands after pruning, repotting or contact with cut tissue.
Alocasia sanderiana W.Bull is the accepted species name and was first published in 1884. The epithet sanderiana honours Henry Frederick Conrad Sander. Alocasia sanderiana 'Nobilis' is the horticultural product name. Separately, the historical botanical name Alocasia sanderiana var. nobilis André is included in synonymy under Alocasia sanderiana. The name Alocasia is conventionally derived from the Greek a, meaning “without”, and Colocasia.
