Alocasia reginae is a Bornean Alocasia with thick, dark green leaves and a close clumping habit. It forms leathery ovate-sagittate blades held on short to medium petioles.
The leaf surface is dark and firm, while the underside can show paler green to purple-flushed tones. On well-developed plants, the petioles may carry green to purple spotting on emerging and mature growth.
Alocasia reginae is native to Borneo, where it is associated with wet tropical forest conditions. Its thick leaf texture and forest-floor habit point to warm, humid growing conditions with filtered light.
In a pot, this species needs both moisture and air around the root zone. A loose mix with fine bark, coco chips, perlite or mineral components keeps air around the rhizome between waterings while still holding enough moisture for steady leaf growth.
Alocasia reginae contains calcium oxalate crystals and is not pet-safe if chewed or eaten. Keep it away from cats, dogs and small children, and wash your hands after handling damaged leaves or sap.
Alocasia reginae was described by N.E. Brown and first published in Gardeners’ Chronicle, new series, volume 21, page 711, in 1884. The genus name Alocasia is based on Colocasia, a closely related aroid genus, with the Greek prefix a-, meaning “without” or “lacking”. The species epithet comes from Latin regina, meaning “queen”.
