Alocasia odora ‘California’

Origin of Alocasia odora ‘California’

Alocasia odora ‘California’ is a compact form of Alocasia odora from Myanmar. Its exact origin within Myanmar is unknown.

Care for Alocasia odora ‘California’

Growth and space: For ‘California’, allow for a clump up to about 120 cm high and 100 cm across, with enough open space for mature leaves to extend freely.

Watering: In warm conditions, water when the mix begins to dry. If cooler conditions slow growth, wait longer because the pot will dry more slowly. Water deeply, let the container finish draining and keep the base clear of collected runoff.

Potting mix: Use a fertile, loose mix in a pot that fits the roots without much extra space.

Light: Give it a bright indoor position and introduce stronger direct sun gradually.

Temperature: Keep ‘California’ within roughly 18–28 °C for routine growth, with protection from prolonged exposure below 10 °C.

Humidity: Aim for 50–60% humidity around the broad foliage, and keep the plant away from direct dry heat.

Feeding: Apply complete houseplant fertiliser at moderate strength while the plant is actively extending, then reduce feeding as activity drops. Cut back or pause when growth slows.

Repotting: Root or shoot crowding is the cue to give it a small increase in container width.

Propagation: This cultivar readily produces offsets. Leave them attached for a fuller clump or separate an offset once it has enough roots to establish independently.

Signs of trouble in Alocasia odora ‘California’

• Leaves yellow and the clump starts losing firmness while the mix is still wet: Stop watering and make sure excess water can drain freely. If the plant keeps declining or the base softens, inspect the roots. If you find soft or rotten roots, use a disinfected blade to remove only the damaged tissue, keep firm healthy roots, discard the removed material and repot in fresh, airy mix in a clean pot sized to the roots that remain. If you cannot clearly tell where rotten tissue ends and healthy tissue begins, stop cutting and send Foliage Factory clear photos of the roots and base. Follow our root rot guide for the full recovery process.
• The dense clump has become hard to water evenly: Check whether offsets and roots have packed the container so tightly that water runs straight through some areas while other parts of the mix stay dry. If the roots need more room, move the plant into a pot only slightly larger. If you want to reduce the clump, separate only offsets that already have enough roots to grow on their own.
• Fine pale stippling or webbing appears on several shoots: Check the leaf undersides and veins for spider mites, including leaves on the inner offsets. Isolate the plant if mites are present and use a treatment labelled for spider mites and indoor ornamental plants. Repeat it only as directed on the label.
• Fresh leaves on several offsets open with silvery scars or black specks: Check new growth for thrips and fresh black droppings. Isolate the plant if thrips are present and use a treatment labelled for thrips and indoor ornamental plants. Repeat it only as directed on the label.

If you're not sure what is causing the problem, or the plant keeps getting worse after you have corrected the likely cause, send us clear photos of the plant and the affected areas so we can help.

Alocasia odora ‘California’: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

What odora means in ‘California’
