Alocasia nycteris ‘Batwing’ is a larger Philippine Alocasia with glossy green leaves that become more bat-like as the plant matures. Young plants may look fairly arrow-shaped at first. Older plants develop longer rear lobes, deeply wavy to partly divided margins and wider, more wing-shaped leaves.
The plant grows from a rhizome and forms an upright to open base. Mature plants can reach around 1–1.5 m in good indoor conditions. The long green leaf stalks show darker streaks below the leaves. It needs more space than a compact shelf Alocasia, especially once the rear lobes lengthen.
Alocasia nycteris is native to Panay Island in the Philippines, including Aklan and Antique. It grows at low elevations in remnant lowland forest, secondary forest, rocky shaded places, roadside shade and disturbed secondary habitats. Indoors, that points to warmth, bright shade, steady moisture and a root zone that stays aerated.
Medecilo, Yao and Madulid published Alocasia nycteris in 2007, based on material from Nabas in Aklan on Panay Island. The name nycteris refers to the bat-like leaf shape and also echoes Nycteris, a genus of bats. The mature leaf shape is why this plant is usually sold as Alocasia ‘Batwing’.
Keep Alocasia nycteris ‘Batwing’ out of reach of pets and children. Its tissues contain calcium oxalate crystals, and sap may irritate sensitive skin when leaves or rhizomes are cut.
Give it space and steady warmth so mature leaves can show the batwing shape more clearly.
