Alocasia 'Maharani' is a compact Alocasia hybrid from Alocasia reginula and Alocasia melo. It forms thick grey-green leaves with pale veins and a firm surface, so even young plants have a compact, solid look.
The plant produces short petioles and heavy-textured blades from a rhizomatous base. Mature foliage can develop deep red undersides, while younger leaves may show greener lower surfaces.
Alocasia 'Maharani' carries the compact, dark-leaved influence of Alocasia reginula and the heavy leaf texture associated with Alocasia melo. The thick grey-green surface makes the pale veins stand out.
The leaves are thick, but the roots still need air. Use a small draining pot and a mineral-organic mix so the rhizome does not stay wet.
Alocasia 'Maharani' is toxic if ingested. Keep it away from pets and young children, and wash your hands after cutting old leaves or divisions.
Alocasia is part of the family Araceae, with a genus name derived from Greek a-, meaning apart from, and Colocasia. The cultivar name 'Maharani' comes from a Hindi word meaning queen, used as a nod to its reginula parent.
