Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Black Stem' is a dark-petioled giant taro with broad green leaves held on deep olive, smoky brown, charcoal or near-black stalks. The leaf blades stay green and glossy; the darker colour comes from the petioles beneath them.
As it matures, the plant develops a thick base, upright petioles and wide leaves. Keep space around the base so the dark petioles are easy to inspect and clean.
The darkest colour is mainly on the petioles and sheath area. New growth may start greener or brownish, then deepen as the tissue matures. Petiole colour varies with age, light, plant strength and the individual plant.
The leaves follow the species shape: broad, sagittate to shield-like and clearly veined. The plant can become top-heavy as the canopy spreads, so container weight matters more with age.
'Black Stem' is a cultivated form of Alocasia macrorrhizos, a wet-tropical species native from Central Malesia to Queensland’s Murray Group. The name refers to the dark stalk effect, although the colour is mainly on the petioles.
Propagate by division, offsets, basal shoots or firm rhizome sections when roots are warm and growing. Mature plants can produce spathes and spadices, but this form is grown mainly for the green leaves and dark petioles.
Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Black Stem' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Place it away from pets and young children, and wear gloves when cutting petioles or dividing the base.
Keep the base accessible so the dark petioles can be checked and cleaned.
