Alocasia longiloba ‘Silver’

Where the species behind Alocasia longiloba ‘Silver’ grows naturally

‘Silver’ belongs to the varied Alocasia longiloba group, which ranges from mainland Southeast Asia through the western and central Malay Archipelago. The species grows on humid forest floors and in ravines, sometimes rooting among boulders or exposed rock.

Growing Alocasia longiloba ‘Silver’

• Rhizome: Let the lengthening rhizome keep its natural position, even when part of it becomes exposed. Secure it at its natural level, with the roots surrounded by fresh airy mix.
• Light: Give it soft, bright light or bright shade. Keep the leaves out of prolonged intense sun.
• Temperature: For steady growth, hold temperatures near 18–29 °C, keeping it clear of prolonged chilling below 15 °C.
• Humidity: Humidity around 60–80% supports steady growth. Gentle airflow around the foliage helps moisture clear.
• Watering: During a period of active growth, let the upper part of the mix dry a little, then rewater while some moisture remains deeper around the roots. If the plant pauses, allow more drying between waterings. Give a thorough watering, then allow surplus water to escape completely.
• Potting mix: Around the rhizome, use a loose, rich mix that drains readily.
• Feeding: Use fertiliser while the plant is actively growing and reduce it during a quiet period.
• Growth rhythm: Expect ‘Silver’ to grow in bursts, with quieter periods between phases of leaf and root growth. During a healthy pause, space waterings further apart and reduce feeding, then return to the active routine when growth restarts.
• Repotting: Repot when the roots crowd the pot or the elongating rhizome needs more room. Keep the rhizome at its natural level in the fresh mix.
• Propagation: Take a rooted offset or firm corm from an established plant, pot it on its own and maintain warmth during establishment.

What to check on Alocasia longiloba ‘Silver’

• Old leaves keep disappearing without a healthy replacement: One fading leaf is not unusual when a fresh bud is developing. If nothing new follows, compare current light and warmth with earlier growth. If the plant also starts losing firmness, examine the roots and lower base.
• Fresh growth develops a scraped texture with black specks: A new leaf can open greener before its silver colouring develops, so colour alone is not evidence of thrips. Look for rough scarring, black specks and distorted new growth, then inspect the folded blade for insects. If thrips are confirmed, isolate ‘Silver’ and use a treatment labelled for thrips on indoor ornamental plants, repeating it according to the label.
• The plant stays droopy while the mix is wet: Inspect the roots and lower base before adding water. Leave firm tissue untouched; collapsing, soft or foul-smelling sections point to rot. If the pot is too roomy or drying very slowly, choose a better-fitting container. For recovery guidance, see our root-rot guide.
• A fine speckled haze dulls the silver foliage: Examine the undersides and long veins for moving spider mites or fine webbing. Natural silver intensity can vary, but new pale stippling or bronze feeding marks are damage. Once mites are present, use a treatment labelled for spider mites on indoor ornamental plants, repeating it according to the label. Our spider-mite guide covers follow-up.

Alocasia longiloba ‘Silver’: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.

Why longiloba appears with ‘Silver’

‘Silver’ retains the species epithet longiloba, formed from Latin longus, “long”, and lobus, “lobe”. The name refers to the elongated lobes.

The botanical species was established by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel in 1856 in Flora van Nederlandsch Indië, volume 3, page 207.
