‘Dragon’s Breath’ is a cultivar of Alocasia heterophylla, a Philippine species found in warm, humid lowland rainforest. Wild plants grow beneath the canopy in filtered light, with regular moisture around their roots.

• Light: Filtered bright light or light shade works well for ‘Dragon’s Breath’; avoid prolonged harsh sun.

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.

The meaning of heterophylla in ‘Dragon’s Breath’

Heterophylla combines Greek heteros, “different”, with phyllon, “leaf”, describing the changing leaf forms.

Carl Bořivoj Presl first described the species as Caladium heterophyllum in 1828 in Reliquiae Haenkeanae, volume 1, page 148. Elmer Drew Merrill transferred it to Alocasia as Alocasia heterophylla in 1908 in Philippine Journal of Science, Section C, volume 3, page 220.
