What does the name Alocasia heterophylla mean?

Alocasia combines the Greek prefix a-, meaning “without” or “lacking”, with Colocasia, the name of a related aroid genus. Heterophylla combines Greek heteros, “different”, with phyllon, “leaf”, referring to the species’ variable foliage.

The formal botanical citation is Alocasia (Schott) G.Don. George Don established the genus at that rank in 1839 in Hortus Britannicus, edition 3, page 631.

Carl Bořivoj Presl first described it as Caladium heterophyllum in 1828 in Reliquiae Haenkeanae, volume 1, page 148. Elmer Drew Merrill later placed it in Alocasia as Alocasia heterophylla in 1908 in Philippine Journal of Science, Section C, volume 3, page 220.
