Alocasia ‘Green Shield’ is a compact Alocasia with rounded, shield-like leaves in a deep green tone. Its leaves grow upward from a small central base, giving the plant a contained, upright habit.
This species stays small, around 30 cm tall, with leaves around 12–16 cm long. Indoors, size varies with light, warmth, pot size and care.
The leaves are broad and rounded, with a clear shield-like outline. They feel smooth to slightly firm, and the veins are easy to see. Some leaves look darker near the main veins, adding natural shading across the green blade.
Older leaves may fade as new leaves develop. A healthy plant usually holds a few leaves at once.
This species is recorded from Mindanao in the Philippines and also occurs in the Lesser Sunda Islands. It has been found growing on rocky soil along forest edges.
Indoors, it prefers warm, stable conditions with bright but gentle light. Use an open mix that drains well and keeps air around the roots after watering.
Growth may slow when light levels drop. It is normal for one older leaf to yellow while the rest of the plant stays firm. In cooler conditions, the mix dries more slowly, so watering intervals usually need to stretch.
Repot once the roots fill the pot or the mix starts to break down. Increase pot size gradually and keep the new mix loose and breathable.
Remove fully yellow leaves at the base. Keep healthy green leaves in place, as they feed the plant while new leaves develop.
You can propagate it by division, offsets or firm corms. Mature plants may produce pale spathes and spadices; remove faded inflorescences with clean scissors once they start to dry.
This plant contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and use gloves if cut tissue irritates your skin.
Alocasia clypeolata was described by botanist Alistair Hay and published in Gardens’ Bulletin Singapore in 1999. The species is native to Mindanao in the Philippines and the Lesser Sunda Islands. The name clypeolata comes from Latin clypeus, meaning “shield”, referring to the leaf shape.
