Warm gold variegation layers over cool silver-grey panels and dark green veins, giving this form a complex combination of colour and raised texture. The aurea pattern can range from fine streaks and scattered patches to broader warm sections.
The plant retains the compact upright habit and thick foliage of 'Silver Dragon'. New leaves initially appear softer and less defined before becoming firmer and more clearly coloured as they mature.
The silver-grey base and dark green vein structure of 'Silver Dragon' are overlaid with yellow, cream-yellow and warm gold variegation. Patterns may include streaks, marbling, scattered patches and broader pale-gold areas. The mature leaves are thick and peltate, with a raised bullate surface. Pale gold sections have less chlorophyll and create the warm variegated contrast, while greener areas do more of the photosynthesis. The species reaches approximately 25–30 cm, with blades around 10–18 × 7–12 cm, although cultivated plants vary.
Alocasia baginda is associated with Borneo, particularly eastern Kalimantan, in warm, humid tropical conditions. It belongs to the Araceae family. The specific name baginda is an Indonesian honorific associated with royal address.
Aurea-variegated Silver Dragon Alocasia contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals, and its tissue should not be eaten. Keep it beyond the reach of pets and young children. Gloves are useful for pruning, repotting or division if your skin is sensitive to sap.
