Where Alocasia baginda comes from

‘Silver Dragon’ is a cultivar of Alocasia baginda, a species from eastern Kalimantan on Borneo. Its habitat within eastern Kalimantan is unknown.

• Humidity: Keep humidity within 70–90% for steady lowland growth.
• Temperature: Maintain 20–28°C and provide consistent warmth around the roots.
• Light: Provide stable bright, filtered light and shield the leaves from strong direct sun.
• Watering: When roughly the upper 20–35% of the substrate feels dry to a finger or skewer, wet the compact root ball fully and let excess drain promptly. Even moisture, steady warmth and an aerated mix are especially important around its small root system.
• Substrate: Use a rich, open mix with bark, perlite or mineral granules to preserve airflow.
• Repotting: Keep the container close to the size of the root system. Repot when roots fill the pot or drainage slows, increasing the size modestly.
• Feeding: Apply a diluted complete fertiliser regularly during active growth; reduce applications as light or growth declines.

• New stippling, lost lustre or webbing appears against the silver pattern: Confirm a progressive change and look for mites, eggs or cast skins beneath the leaf. Isolate, rinse both surfaces and sheltered junctions and reduce dust. If mites or new damage remain, use a product labelled for spider mites and indoor ornamentals, test a small area and repeat only at the label interval.
• Separate translucent blisters become corky beside uniform firm relief: Distinct new blisters support oedema; repeated firm bullation needs no treatment. Empty standing water, clear drainage, reduce prolonged saturation in cool or dim conditions and improve gentle airflow. Existing corking remains. Recurrence, rapid spread or petiole or crown entry needs professional diagnosis.
• The plant wilts or yellows in wet mix, or the base loosens: Stop watering, empty standing water and check drainage, aeration, pot fit, cold and light. If decline continues, wear gloves and keep sap away from skin and eyes before unpotting; after handling, wash hands and clean tools. If the roots and crown are firm, do not cut; correct drainage, aeration, pot fit, light or temperature and monitor. Remove only confirmed mushy, hollow, slimy or collapsing material with disinfected tools, and repot into fresh airy medium in a clean draining pot sized to the surviving roots. Seek professional diagnosis before cutting an unclear or rapidly changing base.
• Edges turn crisp brown: Check actual root moisture, mineral crust, feeding history, exposed heat and persistent dampness. Water and drain only when genuinely dry; flush salts only with firm roots and free drainage. If poor drainage requires root-ball disturbance, wear gloves and keep sap away from skin and eyes before unpotting, then use fresh airy medium in a clean draining pot sized to the surviving roots, wash hands and clean tools. Judge later growth because damaged edges remain.

Alocasia baginda ‘Silver Dragon’: toxic if chewed

• Pets: This Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. Keep the plant and any cut pieces where pets cannot chew them.
• Children and handling: Keep it out of reach of children. Sap from damaged tissue can irritate skin and eyes, so wash your hands after pruning and avoid touching your face.
• Why it irritates: Alocasia tissue contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or contact with sensitive tissue can cause immediate local irritation.
• Possible symptoms: Mouth exposure can cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, nausea or vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.
• After exposure: For a pet, contact a veterinarian. For a person, remove any plant material from the mouth and rinse with water; seek medical or poison-control advice if symptoms are significant. Breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling needs urgent medical attention.
