Alocasia azlanii is a compact Bruneian species with dark glossy leaves, pale to pinkish veins and shifting green, bronze, purple and red tones. The blades are peltate to near-peltate, where the leaf stalk attaches under or close to the leaf surface.
It grows from a small thickened stem and stays compact in a pot. Because the root system is fine and limited, sudden drying, cold substrate or a dense wet mix can show quickly in curling leaves, dull colour or stalled new growth.
Alocasia azlanii has irritating tissue like other Alocasia. Remove trimmings promptly so loose plant pieces are not left where pets or children can reach them, and wash your hands after pruning.
Alocasia azlanii was described from Brunei’s Tutong District, in the Benutan Dam catchment forest. It grows on shaded, moist ground above flood level in mixed dipterocarp forest on sandy clays. In cultivation, keep it warm, give filtered light and use an airy substrate that stays lightly moist. The species was named after Azlan Pandai of the Brunei National Herbarium.
