Broad silver-grey leaf centres and deep green margins make Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' one of the fuller-looking Chinese evergreens. Mature plants form a rounded clump with wide leaves, strong side growth and enough weight to suit a stable pot.
As it matures, the crown needs space to spread and a container that will not tip as the foliage gains size. It is a better fit for a plant stand, low table or floor pot than a narrow shelf.
Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' was released through the University of Florida foliage plant breeding programme in 1992. It was selected for broad silver-green foliage, strong branching from the base and a full indoor habit.
The genus Aglaonema is native from north-eastern India to Papua New Guinea and belongs to Araceae. Older stems of this cultivar can become cane-like, while new side shoots keep the plant dense from below.
Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Position it where pets and small children cannot eat the leaves or stems. If sap contacts the skin during pruning, wash the area with water.
Aglaonema 'Silver Bay' works best where its broad silver-green crown has enough space to widen instead of being squeezed between smaller plants.
