Aglaonema 'Diamond Bay'

Selection history of Aglaonema 'Diamond Bay'

Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’ arose as a stable mutation among tissue-cultured Aglaonema ‘Silver Bay’ plants in the UF/IFAS foliage breeding programme at Apopka, Florida. It was multiplied vegetatively and kept its solid grey-green centre, dark-green border and compact branching. Richard J. Henny, Jianjun Chen and David J. Norman published the cultivar account in 2003.

Growing Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’

• Light: Medium indirect light is suitable, and the cultivar can also grow under lower interior light. Expect slower growth and smaller leaves in darker conditions; keep direct sun off the broad pale centres.
• Temperature and humidity: For steady growth, hold temperatures near 18–27 °C and protect the plant from prolonged conditions under 16 °C. Humidity around 50–60% supports steady growth.
• Watering: Wait until the mix has partly dried and the pot feels lighter, then water the full root ball. Several shoots can make the root ball dense, so check below the surface before watering again.
• Potting mix and repotting: Combine a base mix that holds some moisture with bark and perlite or pumice. Move to a slightly larger pot when the roots are crowded and need more space. Keep the clasping leaf bases at the same level after repotting.
• Feeding: Feed lightly while new foliage is forming.
• Leaf care: Remove only fully yellow leaves and support the broad leaves during cleaning to avoid pressure damage.
• Propagation: Divide rooted shoots that form at the base during repotting or root healthy stem sections in warm, open potting mix.

Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’: problems and solutions

• Persistent wilting or several yellow leaves: A single old lower leaf may yellow naturally. If several leaves yellow together or the plant wilts, check moisture throughout the root ball and any recent cold exposure. If the mix stays wet, let it drain and inspect the roots if decline continues. Preserve every firm root. With disinfected scissors, cut only clearly soft, hollow or rotten parts back to firm tissue and discard the decay. Replace collapsed mix with fresh, airy substrate when needed. See the root-rot guide. If the root ball is very dry, rewet it thoroughly; after chilling, restore stable warmth. The yellow-leaf guide explains other causes.
• Dry tan patches in the pale centre: Strong direct light or heat through glass can scorch the broad central field. Move the plant into filtered light and judge recovery by clean new leaves.
• Dark greasy patches after cold exposure: Chilling injury may appear after a delay. Restore stable warmth, keep the plant away from cold glass and remove tissue only after the damage has stopped changing.
• New leaves become smaller: Very dark conditions can reduce leaf size and slow growth. Check root health first, then move the plant gradually towards brighter filtered light.
• Soft insects and sticky residue appear on young leaves: Soft-bodied insects and sticky residue on young growth indicate aphids. Isolate the plant and rinse off the colony, then use a treatment labelled for aphids only on plant parts permitted by its label. Treat tender developing leaves only if expressly authorised. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course, and continue checking until fresh growth stays clean.

Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Who first published Aglaonema, and what does the name mean?

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Aglaonema in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 1829, page 892.
