A stable mutation of ‘Silver Bay’

Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’ arose as a mutation among tissue-cultured ‘Silver Bay’ plants in the University of Florida foliage breeding programme at Apopka. Its distinctive central leaf pattern remained stable through division, stem cuttings and further tissue culture. As a cultivated mutation of a hybrid, it has no separate wild locality or natural habitat of its own.

Care for aroid canes, roots and new growth

• Propagation: Divide a well-rooted basal shoot during repotting, or root a cane section with at least one healthy node in warm, lightly moist substrate.
• Light: Use medium to bright indirect light. Turn the pot occasionally if light comes mainly from one side, and protect the broad leaves from strong sun through glass.
• Watering: Water when the top layer has dried but the deeper root zone is not yet bone dry, soaking the mix evenly and letting the pot drain before replacing it in a cover pot.
• Temperature, humidity and airflow: Keep Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’ in steady indoor warmth and away from chilling temperatures. Moderate indoor humidity is normally enough; use a humidifier only if persistently dry air causes recurring brown edges.
• Feeding: Use a complete houseplant fertiliser at a low dose while growth is active. Feed less often whenever growth slows, regardless of the season, and never fertilise a dry root ball or a stressed plant.

Damage in the pale centre of Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’ leaves

• Dry marks in the pale centre: Tan patches facing the window usually follow direct sun or heat. A soft or enlarging spot is different: keep the leaf dry and compare it with the brown-spot guide
• Several yellow leaves: One old basal leaf can age naturally. Yellowing across several leaves, persistent wilting in wet mix or a loose base calls for a root check. Inspect the full root ball before disturbing it, then remove only soft dead roots and retain every firm pale root that still supports the plant.
• Repeatedly smaller new leaves: Check the root system before increasing light. Healthy roots with progressively smaller growth indicate that a brighter filtered position may be needed; damaged or restricted roots must be addressed first.
• Pests: Pale patterning can conceal early stippling. Inspect both surfaces for thrips and spider mites and the petiole bases for mealybugs and scale.
