How Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’ originated

Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’ arose as a stable mutation among tissue-cultured Aglaonema ‘Silver Bay’ plants in the UF/IFAS foliage breeding programme at Apopka, Florida. It was multiplied vegetatively and kept its solid grey-green centre, dark-green border and compact branching. Richard J. Henny, Jianjun Chen and David J. Norman published the cultivar account in 2003.

Growing Aglaonema ‘Diamond Bay’

• Light: Medium indirect light is suitable, and the cultivar can also grow under lower interior light. Expect slower growth and smaller leaves in darker conditions; keep direct sun off the broad pale centres.
• Watering: Wait until the upper 2–5 cm of substrate is dry, then water the full root ball. Several shoots can make the root zone dense, so check below the surface before watering again.
• Substrate and repotting: Combine a moisture-retentive base with bark and perlite or pumice, and move up in pot size gradually. Keep the clasping leaf bases at the same level after repotting.
• Temperature and humidity: Use steady warmth, roughly 18–27 °C, and keep it out of cold draughts. Average indoor humidity is generally adequate, with moderate humidity helpful while broad new leaves open.
• Feeding: Feed lightly while new foliage is forming. Reduce the concentration during slower growth and flush the substrate periodically because excess salts can damage tips and margins.
• Leaf care: Remove only fully yellow leaves and support the broad blades during cleaning to avoid pressure damage.
• Propagation: Divide rooted basal shoots during repotting or root healthy stem sections in warm, open substrate.

• Persistent wilting or yellowing with wet mix: Damaged roots may be unable to take up water even though the pot is moist. Check the roots if the symptom persists, remove only clearly soft dark tissue and repot into fresh airy substrate; see the root rot guide.
• Several leaves turn yellow together: Check the whole root ball and think back to any recent chill. A single old lower leaf can age naturally. For a soaked root zone, lengthen the dry-down and improve drainage; for a severely dry pot, rewet it thoroughly; after chilling, return the plant to stable warmth. • Dry tan patches in the pale centre: Strong direct light or heat through glass can scorch the broad central field. Move the plant into filtered light and judge recovery by clean new leaves.
• Dark greasy patches after cold exposure: Chilling injury may appear after a delay. Restore stable warmth, keep the plant away from cold glass and remove tissue only after the damage has stopped changing.
• New leaves become smaller: Very dark conditions can reduce leaf size and slow growth. Check root health first, then move the plant gradually towards brighter filtered light.
• Aphids: Soft-bodied insects and sticky residue on young growth indicate aphids. Isolate the plant and rinse off the colony, then apply a treatment labelled for aphids to the young growth, leaf undersides and petiole bases. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course, and continue checking until fresh growth stays clean.
