Aglaonema 'Apple Fantasy'

Cultivated form and natural range of Aglaonema 'Apple Fantasy'

‘Apple Fantasy’ is a horticultural Aglaonema cultivar. Aglaonema occurs naturally from northeastern India through tropical Southeast Asia to New Guinea, where many species grow as evergreen herbs in humid tropical forest.

Care for Aglaonema ‘Apple Fantasy’

• Light: Medium to bright indirect light suits the green, cream and pink foliage. Keep strong direct sun off the leaves, as the paler areas scorch readily.
• Water and substrate: Let the upper 2–4 cm of mix dry, then water the whole root ball and let it drain. Use an open blend with coir or peat, fine bark and perlite or pumice so the lower pot does not stay saturated.
• Warmth and humidity: Keep the plant around 18–27 °C and away from cold glass or draughts. Normal household humidity is usually adequate; very dry heated air can contribute to crisp edges.
• Potting and handling: Use a pot with drainage holes, keep the grouped stem bases at their existing depth and support a petiole near its base when cleaning a leaf.
• Feeding: Feed lightly while new leaves are forming. Reduce the dose when growth slows and occasionally flush the substrate so fertiliser salts do not accumulate.
• Propagation: Divide basal shoots once they have roots of their own, or root healthy stem sections with nodes in warm, lightly moist substrate.

Common problems with Aglaonema ‘Apple Fantasy’

• Sunburn: Dry pale patches on the side facing the strongest light usually follow direct sun or heat through glass. Move the plant into filtered light; damaged tissue will remain marked, so judge improvement by clean new leaves.
• Brown leaf edges: Repeated drying, very dry heated air and fertiliser salts can all crisp the margins. Check how evenly the root ball is drying, flush visible salt deposits and reduce strong feeding; the brown leaf tips guide covers the main checks.
• Leaf drop: One old lower leaf can die back naturally, but several leaves dropping within a short period points to a recent change in moisture or temperature. Check the root ball, restore steady warmth and keep the watering trigger consistent while the plant settles.
• Cold damage: Grey, dark or greasy patches can appear several days after chilling. Move the plant away from cold glass or draughts, keep it steadily warm and remove a leaf only after the damaged tissue has stopped changing.
• Mealybugs: White cottony clusters and sticky residue can hide where the petioles meet the base. Isolate the plant and wipe or rinse away visible insects, then apply a treatment labelled for mealybugs to the petiole bases, leaf-base folds and both leaf surfaces. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course; see the mealybug guide.

Aglaonema ‘Apple Fantasy’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.
