Agave angustifolia 'Marginata' is a variegated narrow-leaved agave with long sword-like leaves, green centres and pale margins. The rosette widens as it matures, giving the plant a pointed, open profile that needs room around the leaf tips.
The long leaves carry marginal teeth and a terminal spine, so this plant combines strong variegation with a clearly armed agave structure. Bright light, mineral drainage and full dry-down between waterings keep the leaves firm and the roots healthy.
The species Agave angustifolia is native from Mexico to Central America and is associated with dry, open habitats. The narrow-leaved form is reflected in the species name, while the pale margins define Agave angustifolia 'Marginata'.
In container culture, the plant gradually forms a wider rosette with long leaves that can catch on nearby objects. A stable drainage pot and gritty substrate help the roots dry evenly after watering.
Agave is rooted in Greek agauos, a word associated with nobility or admiration. The species epithet angustifolia means narrow-leaved, matching the long, slim leaves of this species.
Agave angustifolia 'Marginata' has toothed leaf margins, a sharp terminal spine and irritant sap. Handle with gloves and keep the plant away from children and pets.
Agave angustifolia 'Marginata' gives a bright pot a sharper outline with long pale-edged leaves and a widening rosette.
