The Species Behind the Horticultural Name marmoratus

The plant in this Kokodama is Aeschynanthus longicaulis, an epiphytic subshrub of wet tropical habitats. Its natural distribution includes the southern Andaman Islands and southern Yunnan and continues through parts of Southeast Asia to north-west Peninsular Malaysia.

Aeschynanthus marmoratus is a synonym of A. longicaulis that remains common in horticulture. Kokodama refers to the rounded coconut-fibre planter used for this product; it is not part of the botanical name.

Care for A. longicaulis in Kokodama

• Check before watering: Feel the substrate inside the coconut-fibre Kokodama. Rewater after the upper layer has started to dry; the outside fibre alone is not a reliable moisture gauge.
• Rewet and drain: For a thorough watering, immerse the coconut-fibre Kokodama in room-temperature water so the planted root zone can rehydrate evenly. Lift it out afterwards and let excess water drain fully before returning it to its place. Do not leave the planter standing in water.
• Light: Keep the patterned leaves in bright filtered light and protect them from prolonged hot midday sun, especially close to glass.
• Temperature: Keep it comfortably warm indoors. An ideal range is about 18–26 °C, while sustained temperatures near or below 15 °C are best avoided.
• Feeding: Use a dilute liquid fertiliser during active growth. Apply it lightly with a normal watering so salts do not build up in the compact root zone.

Problems Specific to the Kokodama Format

• Leaves lose firmness and the substrate is dry: Rewet the coconut-fibre Kokodama thoroughly, then allow it to drain before putting it back in place. Check the substrate again before the next watering so the root zone does not swing repeatedly from very dry to saturated.
• Leaves yellow or soften while the substrate stays wet: Give the root zone more time to dry. If decline continues, inspect the roots, remove brown mushy tissue and replace saturated or compacted mix. If roots are soft or decayed, use the root rot guide to decide what to remove and how to repot.

Aeschynanthus marmoratus and Aeschynanthus longicaulis: why did the name change?

Aeschynanthus combines the Greek aischyne, meaning shame or embarrassment, with anthos, flower. The epithet marmoratus means marbled and refers to the patterned leaves.

Thomas Moore first described Aeschynanthus marmoratus in 1852 in Paxton’s Flower Garden, volume 3, page 56.

Kew’s World Checklist treats Aeschynanthus marmoratus as a synonym of Aeschynanthus longicaulis. Robert Brown first described Aeschynanthus longicaulis in 1839 in Cyrtandreae, page 116; Nathaniel Wallich had proposed the name.
