Aeschynanthus longicaulis is native across parts of South and Southeast Asia, from the Andaman Islands and southern China through mainland Southeast Asia to Peninsular Malaysia.

It grows mainly on tree trunks and branches in humid forest, with roots in loose organic material.

• Light: Bright filtered light keeps the leaves well patterned and the stems leafy. Avoid harsh direct sun that heats and dries the ball rapidly.
• Water: Soak the ball when it feels light and the outer material begins to dry. Keep the foliage above the water.
• Drainage: Let the ball drain until it stops dripping before rehanging it. Do not leave it standing in water.
• Humidity and airflow: Moderate humidity slows drying. Air must move around the leaves and wrapped surface.
• Feeding: Add a very weak balanced fertiliser occasionally during active growth, then rinse with plain water at the next soak.

• Very light ball and soft leaves: The root zone is dry. Soak it thoroughly and allow it to drain.

Aeschynanthus marmoratus and Aeschynanthus longicaulis: why did the name change?

Aeschynanthus combines the Greek aischyne, meaning shame or embarrassment, with anthos, flower. The epithet marmoratus means marbled and refers to the patterned leaves.

William Jack established the genus Aeschynanthus in 1823 in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, volume 14, page 42.

Thomas Moore first described Aeschynanthus marmoratus in 1852 in Paxton’s Flower Garden, volume 3, page 56.

Kew’s World Checklist treats Aeschynanthus marmoratus as a synonym of Aeschynanthus longicaulis. Robert Brown first described Aeschynanthus longicaulis in 1839 in Cyrtandreae, page 116; Nathaniel Wallich had proposed the name.
