Range, Habitat and the Name marmoratus

Aeschynanthus longicaulis is an accepted species native to the southern Andaman Islands, southern Yunnan, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and north-west Peninsular Malaysia. It grows as an epiphytic subshrub in wet tropical habitats.

Aeschynanthus marmoratus, published in 1852, is now treated as a synonym of A. longicaulis. The older name remains familiar in horticulture.

Care for a Patterned Epiphytic Species

• Start with an airy mix: In the wild, this species roots on trees and sometimes rocks. Use a loose mix that still holds some moisture, with plenty of bark or other coarse material, and renew it if it becomes dense.
• Light the foliage without overheating it: Bright filtered daylight shows the pattern clearly. Hours of hot direct midday sun can leave tan scorch on the most exposed leaf surfaces.
• Water thoroughly, then check again: Once the top part of the mix has started to dry, wet it evenly and let the pot drain. Avoid repeated severe drought as well as a pot that stays continuously wet.
• Keep conditions steady: Warm indoor temperatures suit the plant. Keep it away from cold draughts and give the foliage normal room airflow.
• Watch fertiliser salts: Use a dilute complete feed during active growth. If a pale crust develops on the substrate or pot rim, pause feeding and flush the mix with plain water before resuming at a lower strength.

Diagnosing Marks on the Patterned Leaves

• Dry tan patches form mainly on the window-facing side: Concentrated damage on the most exposed leaves points to excessive direct sun or leaf heat. Move the plant back or diffuse the sun. Existing patches will remain; use new growth to judge whether the adjustment worked.
• Tips and margins become crisp: Feel the root ball and inspect the pot rim. If the centre of the root ball is completely dry, rewet it thoroughly. If mineral deposits are visible, flush the mix with plain water. The brown leaf tips guide can help separate overlapping causes.

What does the name Aeschynanthus longicaulis mean?

Aeschynanthus combines the Greek aischyne, meaning shame or embarrassment, with anthos, flower. The epithet longicaulis means long-stemmed.

William Jack established the genus Aeschynanthus in 1823 in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, volume 14, page 42.

Robert Brown first described Aeschynanthus longicaulis in 1839 in Cyrtandreae, page 116; Nathaniel Wallich had proposed the name.
