Xanthosoma sagittifolium 'Mickey Mouse'

Identity and natural origin of Xanthosoma sagittifolium 'Mickey Mouse'

This plant has long been grown as Xanthosoma atrovirens ‘Variegatum Monstrosum’, with “Mickey Mouse” and mouse-cup taro as familiar horticultural names.

Xanthosoma atrovirens is now treated as a synonym of X. sagittifolium, so the current species name is Xanthosoma sagittifolium.

The species occurs naturally from Costa Rica to southern tropical America and grows mainly in wet tropical regions.

Care for Xanthosoma sagittifolium 'Mickey Mouse'

• Light: Give bright diffuse light. Strong sun can scorch pale tissue, while very low light can reduce the contrast of the variegation.
• Humidity and warmth: Aim for 18–30 °C, keeping the plant clear of prolonged chilling below 15 °C. Hold ambient humidity close to 60–80%. Maintain a soft flow of air around the leaves, for everyday care. Maintain gentle air movement around the foliage.
• Water: Keep moisture steady during active growth, watering once the surface begins to dry and draining the pot fully.
• Potting mix: Use a rich, airy, well-drained aroid mix around the tuberous rhizome and roots.
• Feeding and repotting: Feed lightly while new leaves are growing. Inspect the root ball when roots and offsets fill the container, the mix breaks down or the plant becomes unstable. Refresh degraded mix separately, move to a larger pot only when roots or offsets need more room, and improve external stability separately if balance is the only issue.
• Rest: If growth stops and the leaves die back, reduce watering and keep the tuberous rhizome lightly moist until fresh growth returns.
• Propagation: Divide the tuberous rhizome or separate rooted offsets, keeping a healthy growing point with each section.

Common problems with Xanthosoma sagittifolium 'Mickey Mouse'

• White areas turn tan and papery: Sun scorch is likely. Move the plant into bright filtered light and keep damaged tissue dry.
• Leaves develop spots that continue to spread: Leaf-spot disease is possible. Remove badly affected leaves, improve airflow and let the foliage dry between waterings.
• Roots or the tuberous rhizome become soft: Rot is likely. Remove affected tissue back to firm healthy material with a clean tool, discard the rot and repot healthy growth into fresh aroid mix.
• Leaves show mosaic or persistent distortion: Virus is possible. Isolate the plant and propagate only from healthy, symptom-free growth.
• Chewed margins or slime trails appear: Snails or slugs may be feeding on the foliage. Inspect the plant and pot at night and remove the pests.

Xanthosoma sagittifolium ‘Mickey Mouse’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.
