Xanthosoma ‘Mickey Mouse’ is cultivated under the names Xanthosoma sagittifolium ‘Mickey Mouse’ and Xanthosoma atrovirens ‘Variegatum Monstrosum’. Both names refer to the same long-grown horticultural clone.

Xanthosoma is a tropical American genus of forest aroids that grow from underground tubers or rhizomes. This clone is known from cultivation and shares this wider tropical American botanical background.

Repotting, feeding and propagation: Keep the crown and tuber at their original level during repotting, increasing the container gradually. Feed moderately while new leaves are emerging. Remove a fully yellow leaf at the base without cutting the central rolled spear. Separate a rooted offset with a firm piece of the underground storage stem during active growth to preserve the cultivar.

Watering, root care and temperature: Water when the surface starts drying, wet the entire root ball and let surplus drain. Use a rich but aerated aroid substrate that remains evenly moist during active growth. Avoid repeatedly filling the unusual pocket in the leaf tip, where trapped water and debris can damage tissue. If growth slows in winter, reduce moisture but keep the tuber warm and do not allow a cold, waterlogged pot.

Light and humidity: Place Xanthosoma ‘Mickey Mouse’ in bright filtered light with only gentle, acclimated sun. Pale margins and the irregular leaf-tip pocket can scorch in harsh exposure. Moderate to high humidity supports leaf expansion when air circulates around the petioles.

The cupped pocket at the end of a ‘Mickey Mouse’ leaf is normal, but trapped water and debris can damage the tissue. A soft glassy patch, unpleasant smell or brown area that continues to spread calls for prompt draining and better airflow. Blot away standing water, keep the plant apart if the patch grows and avoid splashing nearby foliage.

Repot them in a looser mix, then keep the plant warm. A yellowing leaf that remains firm while the rest of the plant is healthy may simply be ageing.

Strong direct sun burns the cream areas first. The oddly shaped leaf tip and uneven white pattern are normal; a soft underground stem, spreading smell or wet collapse is not.
