Tillandsia usneoides, Spanish moss, grows as hanging silver-grey strands along fine branching stems. Tiny curved leaves cover the wiry growth, all coated in pale scales that create the soft grey colour. Each section is delicate, but many linked pieces gather into a resilient tangled mass with a dry, thread-like texture.
A small bundle gradually branches and catches onto itself, lengthening into a curtain that can reach several metres. Older growth contains countless repeated stems and leaves, so the overall form becomes fuller while every individual part remains minute. Tiny greenish flowers may appear among the strands and can be lightly fragrant at close range. The plant’s mature scale comes from accumulation: thousands of fine silver pieces forming one long suspended veil.
