Tillandsia seleriana is a substantial air plant with an ovoid swollen base wrapped in overlapping leaf sheaths. Thick silver-grey leaves rise from it, then curve outward in broad tapering arcs. A dense covering of scales gives both the bulb and foliage a soft, powdery texture, making the whole plant appear pale and slightly furry.
Juvenile specimens already show the bulbous shape, though the leaves are shorter and more upright. Mature plants develop a much larger base and heavier recurved foliage, creating a bold rounded form that commonly exceeds 25 cm and can pass 30 cm in strong mature specimens. A tall flower spike may emerge with pink to red bracts and purple flowers. Offsets later form around the base, adding smaller silver bulbs beside the older central plant.
