About 'Silver Lady' and the natural range of S. pictus

'Silver Lady' is a silver-patterned cultivated form that is also sold as 'Silver Exotica'.

Scindapsus pictus grows naturally on the Malay Peninsula and on Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi and the Philippines, with its range also extending through Thailand to southeastern Bangladesh. It grows as a climbing vine in wet tropical forest.

Caring for 'Silver Lady' at home

• Light: Give the patterned foliage bright filtered light. Rotate a free-standing pot occasionally so light reaches every side of the vine.
• Training: Guide the vine onto a pole, board or trellis for climbing, or give the flexible stems room to trail from a raised container.
• Watering: Water when the top of the mix has dried and the pot feels lighter, then let excess water drain completely.
• Humidity: Normal room humidity is usually fine. Some air movement helps around crowded leaves and stems.
• Potting mix: Use a free-draining organic mix with bark or coarse coco chips and pumice or perlite.
• Temperature: Indoor temperatures around 18–29°C suit S. pictus.
• Feeding: Feed as directed on the fertiliser label while new leaves are developing. If growth slows in cooler or dimmer conditions, stop feeding and begin again when fresh leaves start to form.
• Repotting and propagation: Repot when roots fill the current pot or the mix begins to drain slowly. Root a stem cutting with a healthy leaf joint (node) in warm, lightly moist mix.

Common problems seen on 'Silver Lady'

• Brown or grey patches spread through the broken silver pattern: Remove affected leaves, keep leaf surfaces dry during watering and increase gentle airflow. Isolate the vine and watch new leaves for fresh spotting.
• Elongated leaves curl as the pot becomes very light: Water until the whole mix is evenly wet, then let the pot drain. On the next cycle, check the mix before the leaves begin to curl.
• Webbing, fine pale speckles, scraped or silvery marks, raised bumps or cottony clusters appear: Check for mites, thrips, scale and mealybugs. Isolate the vine. Use a product labelled for the pest you find on indoor plants and repeat treatment as directed on the label.
• Lower foliage yellows above damp, dense potting mix: Inspect the roots. With a clean, disinfected tool, trim away soft brown roots until only firm, healthy roots remain. Discard the removed roots and repot in fresh, free-draining mix.
• Dull grey-brown or wilted areas follow cold exposure: Keep it warm with a steady room temperature. For the next watering, wait until the top of the potting mix is dry and the pot feels lighter. Remove areas that turn brown, dry or soft.

Scindapsus pictus ‘Silver Lady’ is toxic to people and pets

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

The meaning and history of Scindapsus pictus

Scindapsus comes from the ancient Greek plant name skindapsos. The Latin adjective pictus means painted, decorated or coloured, referring to the patterned foliage of the species.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Scindapsus in 1832 in Meletemata Botanica, page 21.

Justus Carl Hasskarl first described Scindapsus pictus in 1842 in Tijdschrift voor Natuurlijke Geschiedenis en Physiologie, volume 9, page 164.
